Salvage Vanguard Theater presents amendment: the making of an american myrth, or the slow sipping of a peacock tea by Taji Senior on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Friday 21 August 2020 at 8:30 p.m. CDT (Austin, UTC -5) / 9:30 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4) / 6:30 p.m. PDT (Los Angeles, UTC -7).
Salvage Vanguard Theater presents a new solo work by Taji Senior that examines America’s failed vision of a more perfect union.
We are all witnesses, judge and jury in the trial of Ma’Dear, a charming defendant accused of “sowing a seed of rebellion.” She launches into the play with a fiery opening argument and insists that while there is guilt to be had, it is not hers. She calls to the stand several witnesses, including Venida and Kalief Browder, Paul Robeson, Fred Hampton and others.
We come to understand that Ma’Dear is actually an enslaved woman standing trial for destruction of property after making and drinking, Peacock tea, an abortifacient used by enslaved women as a means of reproductive resistance during slavery. Ma’ Dear admits aborting her unborn child, but insists the true crime is the lie of the U.S. constitution and the illusion of freedom for Black people as outlined in its amendments. She refuses to be the matriarch of a lineage born and bound to a failed promise and outright lie.
